What is Organizational Coaching

Organizational coaching provides students with the necessary skills to identify and manage their academic and personal habits. Over time, students develop the language and ability to understand their approach to schoolwork and adjust their routines to support sustainable academic success.

Services

Organizational Coaching

Organizational coaching is focused on helping students develop the executive skills (time management, planning, routine development, study skills) necessary to support their academic progress. Unlike tutoring or content-based test prep, organizational coaching addresses the “how” your student works or approaches their work rather than “what” they are specifically studying. The focus of our work is helping students take ownership of their habits and develop the confidence to complete their academic work with minimal support.

All Organizational Coaching clients begin their services with a free consultation where you, your student, and myself discuss their academic histories, needs, and goals for our work together. Students who receive coaching services typically meet with me for 1-2 hours per week, and stay with me until they feel that they are achieving their goals independently with little support from me. This can last as little as a few months, or can extend for the duration of their time in school.

Academic Tutoring

Where organizational coaching addresses “how” students approach their school work, academic tutoring focuses on “what” students are working on. All academic tutoring sessions are 1:1, and typically include one 60-minute session per week. Like Organizational Coaching sessions, students can meet with me in-person or online. I have extensive (500+ hours) of individual tutoring experience in the following broad subjects: English/Language Arts, History/Social Sciences, and Mathematics.

English/Language Arts

Along with helping students learn (or re-learn) the fundamentals of American English grammar and reading skills, I am experienced in tutoring students in English/Language Arts from Kindergarten through all undergraduate-level English courses. I have helped students prepare for the AP Language test, AP Literature test, and the SAT Literature subject test.

History and Social Studies

With a dual-degree in History and Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia, I possess both content expertise and tutoring experience in all levels of History and Social Studies (Kindergarten through all undergraduate-level courses). I have helped students prepare for the AP World History, European History, and American History exams, and have provided content tutoring for students taking the SAT US History subject test.

Mathematics

In addition to helping your students learn and review key math concepts, I have extensive experience in providing tutoring in all levels of math through AP Calculus. In addition to providing content review for the SAT and ACT Math sections, I have helped prepare students for the content covered in the SAT Math I and II subject tests.

Expertise

As a Charlottesville native, I have grown up in the city and consider its inhabitants my family. I am an alumnus of both the Renaissance School and the University of Virginia, and have spent the past 4.5 years working with students as a tutor and coach. I have over 6500 hours of direct student contact, and have developed curriculum for students age 6-20.

My Approach

My work builds upon over 6 years and 6500 hours of individual tutoring and coaching with students where I have learned to listen to who they are and what they need. The foundation of my work is built upon gaining students' trust and meeting them where they are in their processes. Students will be required to work in and out of session, but will be supported in the cultivation of their organizational habits and skills. A successful coaching relationship involves one where students can be honest about their needs and think critically about how to improve their work habits. While counseling and coaching are both focused on student wellness, organizational coaching is not the same thing as counseling. Where counseling is focused on students’ overall well-being, organizational coaching is exclusively focused on their academic habits (including reading and homework, studying for tests, completing long-term assignments and projects).

Kevin Culbertson has worked with my 15-year-old daughter for four years now. His tutoring and coaching services have made a significant impact upon not only grades and test scores but also self-confidence. My daughter believes more strongly in her own ability to perform well in her honors-level high school math classes. I recommend Kevin without reservation.

Background and Bio

I grew up in a military family and traveled much of my young life, but I am now glad to call Charlottesville home. I graduated from the University of Virginia in 2012 with majors in Foreign Affairs and History. I teach and tutor ESL with the International Rescue Committee. I am an avid songwriter and guitarist with my band YonderPhonics. In addition to performing with my band in town, you may see me performing at a local singer/songwriter night. When I am not working with your student or connecting with the Charlottesville community, I like writing, hiking, and cheering on our National Championship-winning Hoos.
